KOSHARE CLOWNS – As “Delight Makers” they contribute comedy to the solemn religious dramas of ceremonial dances at many of the pueblos and villages. These orders differ in name and duties at the various pueblos. They are known as Koshare by the Keres, Kossa among the Tewa, Tabosh at Jemez, Chffoneti, as the black eyes at Taos and Isleta. These extraordinary beings are stripped from head to foot in horizontal black and white earth colors. Their comic action is impromptu and occurs between the appearances of the main drama dance. They make use of incidents that are going on or mimic spectators in the crowd. They are special spiritual leaders in the pueblos they are from.
